HomeCostBrief cost guidance is intended for planning. Published ranges should be built from dated U.S. sources, transparent assumptions and clear explanations of what can change the final number.

National, state and local estimates

National ranges are useful for orientation, but state and local labor markets, climate, codes and contractor availability can materially change actual costs.

Data years and updates

Cost pages should state the data year and update schedule when figures are used. Inflation or market changes should be explained rather than silently assumed.

Low, planning and cautious ranges

When ranges are shown, they should define what is included in each scenario and avoid presenting planning numbers as quotes or appraisals.

Included and excluded items

Guides should identify labor, materials, permits, access, emergency service, disposal, taxes and optional upgrades when relevant.

Calculator assumptions

Current calculators use preview assumptions for budgeting. Inputs stay in the browser, and results should be treated as planning ranges until formulas are backed by documented research.
